A Brief Introduction

The Friends of Crowe Bridge Park is a community group which was formed in February 2007 in response to the possible sale of the Crowe Bridge Conservation Area. The Crowe Bridge Conservation Area is a significant natural and recreational waterfront conservation area located within Northumberland County outside of Campbellford, Ontario.

The Park was closed from April 1, 2007 through May 22, 2010. The Friends of Crowe Bridge Park, a local group of concerned citizens and volunteers worked with the Crowe Valley Conservation Authority (CVCA) and the Municipality of Trent Hills to re-open the park. During 2008/ 2009 with a grant from the Campbellford/ Seymour Community Foundation (CSCF), we were able to hire a consultant to do an evaluation of the Park and develop a Management Plan with alternative scenarios for the operation of the property. This plan was reviewed by the public, the CVCA and the Municipality and was accepted by CVCA and the Municipality. Subsequent negotiations lead to a one year lease agreement that allowed the park to be opened in 2010.

THE PARK IS OPEN!!!

On May 22, 2010, the official re-opening ceremony was held at Crowe Bridge Park, including the cutting of the locks and chains on the gate, and a welcome to a crowd of several hundred people to enter and enjoy the park again.

We are a registered non-profit organization and are actively undertaking the role of maximizing the potential of this beautiful, natural place so cherished by our community. With our many volunteers the Friends organization will assist the community by informing the public of the status of the Park, we will engage in open discussions about the Park, we will enhance education opportunities and secure ongoing funding.

Our various activities and projects will be carried out in close cooperation with the CVCA and will depend very much on public support including volunteer labor, membership fees, and special financial donations.

Thank you for your support!

Projects

"Supported by a grant from

The Campbellford/Seymour Community Foundation"

Our first project was to submit a grant application to the Campbellford/Seymour Community Foundation for funding. We have received a $15,000.00 grant from the Campbellford Seymour Community Foundation to implement our project. The project will be to work with the CVCA in hiring a consultant to develop a five year plan to rehabilitate the Crowe Bridge Conservation Area.

The consultant conducted an evaluation of the current status of Crowe Bridge Park and document issues that would need to be addressed before the park could be opened for public use. The consultants report would recommend several alternatives for the future of Crowe Bridge park that would keep it in place as a successful public recreation facility and Trent Hills tourist destination.

Our current project (2010/ 2011) is an evaluation of the trails in the park and a plan for rehabilitating and upgrading the trail system. Many trails had been damaged by ATV use when the park was closed, including rutting and damage to vegetation, fences, picnic tables, signage and buildings. Walking the trails and enjoying the forest, geology and wildlife of the park are favorite activities for visitors.

Our consultants are the Trails Study Unit of Trent University, directed by Dr. John Marsh of Trent University and Al MacPherson of Fleming College. During this project the trails will be assessed for necessary repair, will be mapped by GPS, will be classified for difficulty and interpretive uses, and a map and brochure produced. In addition a trail loop will be identified for disabled access by wheelchairs and mobility scooters. This will add to the fun and adventure at Crowe Bridge Park making it more interesting and safer for all users to enjoy.
